What is the UK Global Talent Visa?

The visa targets leaders and emerging leaders with exceptional skill or promise in science, engineering, arts, film, architecture, fashion, and tech fields. Introduced in 2020, it replaced Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) and requires no job offer or salary thresholds.

You can stay up to 5 years and apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 3 years if endorsed as a leader, or after 5 years if endorsed as a potential leader.

The Global Talent Visa has several key distinctions from other work routes.

It does not require a job offer, has no salary requirement, and does not require proof of English language ability. The core requirement is endorsement or an eligible award.

Endorsing bodies vary by sector. For science, engineering, humanities and medicine, these are The Royal Society, The British Academy, and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). For arts and culture, these are Arts Council England, the British Fashion Council, and the Royal Institute of British Architects. For digital technology, the endorsing body is Tech Nation.

Applicants holding internationally recognised awards (Nobel Prize, BAFTA, Grammy, Pritzker Prize, Turing Award) can apply without endorsement, fast-tracking the application and removing peer review requirements.

How to apply for a UK Global Talent Visa

Decision times are 3 weeks when applying from outside the UK and 8 weeks when applying inside the UK.

UK Global Talent Visa extension

To extend, your original endorsement must remain valid and you must prove income or activity linked to your area of expertise (there is no minimum amount).

Accepted evidence includes payslips, employer letters, bank statements, HMRC records, and dividend vouchers for self-employed applicants or business owners.

The extension fee is £718 per person, plus the IHS at £1,035 per year.

UK Global Talent Visa to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

You become eligible for ILR after 3 years if endorsed as a leader, or after 5 years if endorsed as a potential leader.

To qualify, you must not have been outside the UK for more than 180 days in any 12-month period, must show continued field contribution in the UK, and must provide evidence of ongoing income or work activity.

Once you hold ILR, you no longer need a visa or the healthcare surcharge. After 12 months with ILR, you can apply for British citizenship.
